The Nicolás de Bari ruins once housed the first hospital facilities in America, built in 1503 during the government of Fray Nicolás de Ovando. The hospital also served as a church, which was destroyed by earthquakes in the past century.

Located in Santo Domingo, in Hostos and Luperón Streets, the ruins are a relic of old Santo Domingo, during the time where society in the Americas was prospering and acquiring technology and modern day knowledge. By 1519 de main phase of the building was complete, but according to historians the original building constructed by Nicolás de Ovando was made out of wood and hay. Nevertheless, the structure is attributed to his initiative and dedication. By 1522 the hospital reached its full bloom by being able to attend up to 60 people, serving up to 700 sick per year. By the 18th century, the building was abandoned for unknown reasons, but it is believed that earthquakes during the 17th and 18th century destroyed it beyond repair.
