The Carambola golf course was built by the late Laurence Rockefeller as a centerpiece for a 4,000 acre development, and the course was part of a luxury resort complex until the early 1990's. In 2003 a group of full and part time residents of St. Croix came to an arrangement with the owners to acquire half ownership in the course in exchange for making the necessary capital investment to bring the course back to its former glory. This arrangement went into effect in 2004 and the management of the club was taken over by the membership group. Since then, investment in facility improvement has been an ongoing process.
